Right, and the wood acts as a wick.   But if you throw a lit match in a pool of Diesel, the match goes out.   Unless there is some heat (or pressure) to vaporize the diesel.   Oil burners atomize the fuel under pressure,  then it burns. Diesel engines inject atomized fuel under high heat and pressure, and it burns.

Two things - one, Diesel burns, or our engines wouldn't run. Two, a
neighbor - an old farmer - burns piles of trees that he's cleared by
pouring a couple of quarts of Diesel on the pile, and setting it on fire
with one of those long lighters.
