We took a drive up the coast last Spring. Someone in my kid's class had donated the full day private tour of Hearst Castle to the school fundraising auction and we won it, so we spent all morning and afternoon with a really nice tour guide who grew up in Cairo with her missionary parents and scooted us around to the different parts of the place between tour groups. I have to say the guy sort of knew how to live. Except the exotic animal zoo, which seemed a step too far even for him. I can see why he built it there, as it is really sort of a magical site with the clouds spilling over adjacent ridges at various times of the day, fog obscuring the driveway etc. We drove alongside some sort of exotic mountain goat on the way down. Man that thing could flat cover some ground. Anyway I had not been there since 1973 so it was a total nostalgia trip to see how memory aligned with the reality.
