I just went thru this with our 15 year old Maytag front loader. Bearings were noisy for probably a year or 2 before I finally did the job but they never started smoking. Sounds like you might have more serious problems. In any case the machine had to be nearly completely disassembled but it was not too hard of a job. It’s nice and quiet now.
