We struggled with this on a GE front loader bought in the early 2000s. Unfortunately, it was not one of the front loaders covered under the massive recall campaign that seemed to affect nearly every one that was built. I used to drain the sump almost weekly, but could never get it totally clean. Black slimy stuff built up in it, and no combination of bleach or other chemicals would clean it out completely.
