The things are magically impactful.  Some sort of thermal deployment system.  
The colder it gets, the harder the soles and the metal spikes fully deploy.  
Less cold and the traction devices retract into the softer bottom.

I did try the strap on sort, but found them hard to mount and prone to rapid 
wear with extended dog walking.  It got interesting when the thing unseats in 
mid stride with strapping rips
