I have zero tech information of this particular engine, but, like many late
version diesel engines, it has computer controlled injectors, which use
high pressure oil controlled by an electrical device, controlled by an
engine computer. IF that is the system, in principle, this car uses, I
posit as follows:

Oil change place put in wrong oil, or failed to seal up the oil system
somehow. Owner drove the car till low oil, or improper oil, caused it to
run "weird" and he stopped, heard knocking, and checked oil. Scared the
hell out of him because it sounds really bad, so he put it in the "wait for
Kaleb to buy list".... then came Kaleb.

My thoughts... One or more injectors seized internally due to lack of high
pressure oil to open and close injector, or wrong oil... The term is, I
believe, "Stiction" [likely wrong spelling ] ... regardless, the end result
is that injector[s] are no longer firing "in time" as ordered by computer..
thus, making a huge knock sound, because the engine is running "out of
time"..
Big scary sound goes away suddenly because the injector[s] that were "stuck
for lack of lubrication" finally got oil enough to open and close, more or
less when they should.

Following this line of thought, the oil change guy used 20W0 gas engine
oil, it got sucked out because it was the wrong oil, guy put the right oil
in to replace the empty dipstick, but never ran the car. Kaleb ran it
longer than he did, so it finally got enough oil to the high pressure oil
pump to run the injectors, and noise went away...
Maybe.... but... the damage is done to injectors which seized internally.
