I've had 2 auto darkening helmets, I don't know where the first one came from,
it was a gift from my in-laws. The replacement is from HF. Both are pretty good
with adjustable darkness levels using a dial on the side. MUCH better than a
conventional helmet anyway.

The ability to lay down a good weld [insert pretty weld] is a factor of
coordination of hand/eye control.... you see the color change of the weld
puddle and make minute hand movements to control the size and direction of
the liquid metal, the filler rod material, arc distance [which controls
heat and penetration].
The bottom line is, you have to first see what is happening, then "auto
correct" the weld area as necessary [without having to think about it]
based on that hand / eye / skill coordination.
Thus, spend the money to get the best helmet, with the best lense, to get
the best weld. You will ultimately be glad you spent the money. [The wifes
reaction may not match your enthusiasm].
