A while back the wife said it sounded like the heat pump was going out as it was loud. I was out of town but when I got back it seemed perfectly normal. One day about a month ago it was running and the outside unit was loud like a bearing in the fan was going out. Also, the inside unit was not running at all. I shut it off figuring I would turn call the service contract people. Later on it got cold enough to turn it back on so I did. All seemed normal until this morning. It has been warm so it was shut off but I did turn in on last night as it got cold. It was fine then a little while ago it was back to the fan bearing sound outside, and inside unit was not running. I shut off the thermostat and after a minute or 2 the outside unit shut off as expected. Just now I’m sitting here and with the thermostat completely off, the outside unit started running. It sounded normal with no fan bearing noise but the inside unit was not running. In fact, it’s out there running right now. I’m getting ready to go shut the breaker off. What is going on with this thing?
