I would say he should have had the vehicle hauled to the dealer and had them re-fill it. I would also suggest that if he cannot differentiate between the engine drain and the transmission drain his forte is not mechanics and he should just do other things with his life.

Oh boy….we have a marriage on the rocks in Illinois.
My brother-in-law, in an effort to change the oil on my sister’s new (5900
miles) Outback Wilderness, drained the CVT fluid by mistake. I’ve been
coaching him via FaceTime on getting it filled back up while I’ve been
encouraging my sister not to plunge a spade thru his sternum as he’s laying
under the car.
As you would expect, this is a temperature dependent thing (CVT @ 100 degrees
F) to ensure proper level. I’m not sure how or if Glenny will mind the
temperature that closely.

Will this void their warranty? On these things the CVT fluid gets changed at
30K miles. Do I really need to drive home to him that getting the temp of the
CVT to 100 degrees F or ensure proper level is a big deal? My sister is, as the
kids say, flipping her shit, thinking that, at the very least, Glenny has
voided their warranty, and at the very worse, “ruined the only car I’ve ever
loved.”
