I’ve done it, but considering that this is nothing more than a flip for the guy and he has no interest in the vehicle itself, you’re essentially assuming the risk he took when he bought it at auction. If it was a private seller/owner I would have a different attitude as you could at least get some history out of them, but in this case that’s a big black hole and isn’t going to change unless you get a VMI.
If you were Floyd with a vast estate and cars to scavenge parts off of as well as resources for reprogramming ECUs, I could totally see it. But in your case I think it’s a bad idea. I would feel the same way if it were me, even knowing what we do about it at this point. Unless I was hell bent on having one of these, I would move on. There will always be more. Worst case, check it out, scan it, (don’t share the results with the seller, he doesn’t deserve or need thte information) and report back to see if it’s repairable. Then you’ve got to make a quick decision as to whether or not you want to assume the risk.
