Hi Bob,
My 91 300D does that too - even when starting cold in the morning - turn key
and wait for GPs, the fan comes on - startup - it eventually goes off. I've
read Peters well written troubleshooting comments but have not gone looking
for trouble as the fans works when it gets hot just like I want it to --
with temps in the upper 90s I had to idle for a few minutes - with the aux
fans on the temp stayed at 80C - the temp of my thermostat. I was amazed at
the capacity of the cooling system - AC running, at idle - and no rise in
temp.
Glad you found the cause of the blown fuses -

Subject: [MBZ] Aux Fan Craziness
So....I finally re-realized my aux fan on this car has never worked. I
thought of this as I was troubleshooting the #1 fuse issues I had (found a
remnant of an old fuse making contact to one end on the #1 fuse holder
making, I guess, a dead short...I have no idea where this piece of old
fuse came from). When I was in the fuse block, I noticed there was no fuse
in place for the aux fan. duh. I put the correct fuse in and, later in the
day, I noticed the fan was operating.
A couple of times yesterday, when I started the car after it had set for a
couple of hours and cooled off (well, relative for here) the fan came on
when I turned the ignition switch. The engine temp was about 135 degrees
F.
Now, this fan should switch on at a prescribed temperature correct? And/Or
should it be on when ever the AC is on?
