WEll, they usually rattle for quite a while for a second or 2 at startup before the break. Got to observe what its telling you. What year is it? Where is it located?

Today I went and changed the oil on my 420SEL. After oil change, I cranked
up the car and it ran for about 5-6 seconds. Then it would not start. Then
it would not turn over, locked up. Well after some investigation and
removing valve covers, I found that the timing chain guide broke and well it
now needs new valves. Since the car has 230k miles I am debating if it is
worth the time to do a head job or not.
