Wow!

According to some of the listers, a diesel transmission for an '83 300D:

Always starts in FIRST,
Always starts in SECOND,
Always starts in THIRD.

Anybody want to chime in "Always starts in FOURTH"... YMMV........

Having owned a 1980 300SD (don't know the trans #'s), it ALWAYS started from a dead stop in SECOND (if the pedal not put to the metal). If I floored it, it ALWAYS started in FIRST and I could count the shifts and monitor them on the speedo with the "I", "II", "III", "IV" marks......

And when I autocrossed "her", I put the trans shifter in "S", held the brakes, revved the engine to 2,400 rpms (to spool the turbo), dumped the brakes and WENT FOR IT! Never took the trans out of the "S" position. RPM's would go to 4,500+.... And stayed in SECOND and THIRD, but could reach FIRST by flooring it. I do miss the "mistress".. So named because I spent a "lot of money on her, a lot of time w/her and liked to crawl under her and screw around". A quote from a former girlfriend. After AXing, she would run a whole lot better....... I mean the 300SD!!! Time to go back to reality.

Granted my experience is only anecdotal (I laugh at it sometimes, too), but I believe that is how all diesel transmissions were designed.

Take care,

It's a 4 speed that starts out in 3rd. The hard 3 - 4 gear shifting is the nature of the transmission. It can be adjusted out but at the expense of
loosening up the 2 - 3 shift & accelerating transmission wear.

Subject: [MBZ] How many gears in an 83' 300D?

OK, for some reason I was thinking the tranny in my 83' 300D was a 4 speed. It's shifted rather hard since I got it more than a year ago. Then the other day a thought occurred to me and I paid more attention today. Sure enough it seems like I only have (or am using) 3 gears. If I had to guess, I'd say I'm missing 3rd as it's always hardest shifting into top gear. So what I'm wondering if that's why it clunks so hard is because it's dropping
from 2nd into 4th.

Am I stoned and this is only a 3 speed? Or have I somehow lost a gear? If
I lost a gear, how the heck can that happen?

Thanks!
Levi
