Not sure about a limit - but BRM (British Racing Motors) built a H16 in the 60s. The sound was awesome but it was too heavy making the F1 car it was installed in too slow to compete -

So did GM(Cadillac), as recently as a one-off a couple years back at the
Detroit auto show.  The Volkswagen W-16,  Bugatti.... And then there was
