Years ago, I had a steel jack stand fail. I owned a pair of stands manufactured out of tube steel. I put my 81 Pontiac Bonneville diesel on the stands to check the brakes & I watched the one on the left side slowly collapse. The pin that was used to adjust the stand height slowly ripped through the outer tube until the tire was back on the ground. Both jack stands were properly placed. I had used these for years & I guess the steel under the pin fatigued enough to start the tear & once it started, it continued until enough weight was removed to stop.
