Folks, oil does NOT "break down"! The contaminants increase, and some additives lose their effectiveness, but the limit for a good synthetic Diesel oil (Delvac1 and its Mobil1 equivalent) is the soot held in suspension. In the usual conditions and in a normal engine, the soot levels typically won't get to the M-B limits until well after 10k miles. I've confirmed this with LarryT's oil analysis on my 2 older Diesels.

my only real concern is that with extended oil change intervals, can the oil
filters keep up?  I've been running M1 5w-40 truck/suv oil, and my real
worry is that the filter will quit before the oil breaks down.
