Started a fire? [OK, my mechanical skills are limited].

OK, I have a puzzler. Let's see how good you all are. FIist correct

wins a FREE Puccini coffee (must be collected in Washington, D.C.)
1985 300CD. For the past week we plugged in the block heater and the car
started instantly and perfectly in gtemps. as low as 10 degrees F.
Yesterday, the alley was iced up so we had to park on the street
overnight,
with no way to plug in the block heater. Temp. was 17 degrees this AM
with
a wind chill of maybe 5. We glowed and kept glowing 10 seconds after the
light went out. Engine turned but would not fire. Tried twice more,
using
the gas pedal, but to no avail! I had her pop the hood and try a fourth
time while I watched - still turned but no dice. Battery was strong,
fortunately. I stared at the engine, thought deeply and then fiddled with
something in the engine area. I then myself tried to start it again using
the same preglow procedure. This time the engine fired instantly and ran
flawlessly.
Question: What exactly did I do under the hood?
Hint: I have never done this before or heard of this tactic being used as
a
technique for getting a balky diesel to start in cold weather. This
doesn't
prove or mean anything but then again, it might.
Good luck, and apologies in advance if this puzzler is wya too elementary
and an insult to the collective Okiebenz intelligence.

Looks like this dude has a Xferable warranty.
You reckon it's one offered by the dealer they charge a bizillion $s for
when you buy the vehicle?
Would this be outside the years for sludge issues?

Bob,
Jeez, that's right in your neighborhood. I went to the PHx library
today
and checked the service bulletins in AllData again. It says models from
98 to
2001. The TSB was issued 12/5/2003. There may be later ones, but I
didn't
see any. The TSB did not discuss warranty pass throughs, though it did
caution dealers to check the FSS history for excessive mileage between
oil changes.
Apparently the PCM maintains an internal history of when the FSS was
reset,
and at what mileage on the oil.
