If you can get it for less, you might want to. My VW Quantum diesel had
horrible starting problems. Even in warm weather, four or five long cranks
before it would fire up. Turned out to be a leaking fuel line -- this engine
seems to be very sensitive to any air in the system. Dropped the fuel tank,
re-plumbed, and it now starts first turn of the key, down to single-digit
temps. Could be that the problems aren't that difficult to sort out.

And by "get it for less" I mean I paid $50 for mine, then put about
$500/$700 more into it (parts only) including four new Regatta 2 tires.
Still using the battery that came with it, though.

It really pulls thru the snow and gets 50 mpg.

(Sorry, Loren, but at least you get first refusal if I decide to part with
it.)

So, don't give up too soon on the Dasher.

It was just down the street from me, and the guy was asking $750 for
it. I
figured it was worth a look. It had a pretty good body though it was in
need of fresh paint, and the interior was pretty good other than some
cracks
in the dash. Then, the fun began. First off, it wouldn't start on it's
own, not too good. We did manage to get it running with a little pull
down
the street. One cylinder was weak at idle, but it seemed OK once it got
moving. Oil cap test revealed LOTS of blowby, and while it was idling, it
boiled over, not a pretty sight and not a good thing to have happen when
trying to sell a car! Needless to say, I "DASHED" right on outta there
and
didn't buy the car.
