I don't think I'd buy a used VW TDI without good service records. VW
specifies a limited range of synthetic oils, and the forums at
tdiclub.com are full of horror stories about ignorant dealers and
mechanics putting nonapproved oils in and ruining the engines.
FWIW, my ex-wife's '01 New Beetle TDI has been pretty much
trouble-free. Fun car and gets an honest 35 mpg city (45 highway)
with the automatic tranny. My biggest complaint about that car was
the horrible stereo! (It's the "premium" Monsoon system, too. Go
figure.)
