self-destruction.  Probably the insulation was designed to degrade in
the sunlight (UV light) like trash bags are now,

I'm glad they did this, those piles of automotive wiring harnesses
strewn along the roadsides were getting pretty bad.  The copper
takes on a pretty verdigris and blends in with the grass once that
pesky insulation has crumbled and fallen off.
