Clarification of my thoughts -
You push the shift lever forward to engage reverse - on our '81 240D,
and I think the column shift 220D was up, so the rod at the other end
of the center pivoted shift lever will move in the opposite direction
- towards the rear of the car. SO it now depends on whether the arm on
the tranny shaft is pointed up or down - if up, then engaging reverse
will rotate the shaft clockwise, if down, it will rotate
counter-clockwise. I'm seeing it pointing up by memory, but then I've
never had to pay close attention to it, so don't trust my memory on
this point. Either way, there are only two choices though ---
