Hello Ned , I agree it's a PITA to have to remove the intake ! My 617s (126 and 123) are a breeze to work on as compared to the 606.
My MB tech/mechanic friend who replaced the delivery valve seals showed me that you could start and run the engine with the intake off if diagnosing fuel leaks. The engine did run rough, but it beats assembling and disassembling back and forth.
