Each platform has its advantages and I agree that the Cherokee is a
superior off road vehicle. But the Grand Cherokee with the inline 6 is a
superior highway vehicle.

actually, if you want to be technical about it, there's at least 3
different versions of Grand Cherokees; the original ZJs, WJs, and the
(IIRC) WKs. all of them except for the first half of the first year of
the ZJs got the ChryCo trannys, and those early '93 ZJs with the 4.0L
straight-6 and AW4 tranny are highly coveted by people in the know. as
they progressed, they followed the same path most humans seem to; they
became heavier and less capable with an increasing biased taste towards
comfort and luxury vs. performance. ;-)

frankly, i prefer my XJ Cherokee to any and all of the Grands, but i

bought it knowing that it was only a platform on which to build a tool
to do what i really wanted to do on roads that may or may not be paved
and/or snow covered. it's been very acceptably cost-effective for that
and worked amazingly well at it, but hey, i've only put about 220K miles

on mine so far,... ;-)

cheers!
