Went thru the same thing with my 91 300D 2.5T and finally found a way to put 
a Alpine CD changer in the trunk and continue using the MB Head Unit in the 
dash and the Amp and Tuner in the trunk.  If that's what you are trying to 
get to let me know and I'll tell you what I did.  It's not cheap but the 
factory system is kept intact.

BTW, I get 29-31mpg also. (except when the vacuum line from the vac pump 
came loose and the turbo stopped working - shifting was abrupt also)
