You're thinking W114. The W123 250 had an M123 2.5L five-bearing six -
the final variant of the old M180 from 1952 or so. POS Solex carb. The
M110 appeared in the 123 in both injected and POS Solex carb versions.

I'm trying to remember how the W114 worked. The 250 was either a 2.5L
M114 or a 2.8L M130, right? The 280 was M110.

Yep, 1980-'86 (yes, 1986). Also a 230CE until '85. The 230CE
four-speed is my favorite Mercedes of the era. Simply wonderful car.
