The railroads actually seem to be making a comeback. Lots of them are expanding and upgrading their tracks(double tracks and upgrading to higher speed corners in downtown ($$$) areas). The folks at Trains magazine are also commenting on the increase in business. Most of them say it is coming from the saturated highway system. They have many years of neglect to recover from though.
