Seems unlikely, given the protected nature of life inside the differential. And oil is no problem, it has to be steel particles in order to cause trouble. That's the nice thing about VR sensors. Far more likely is a bad connection, or a winding that is opening up in the sensor itself. You _sure_ you thoroughly cleaned the tone rings (toothy bits) on the front wheels? I think 90% of sensor trouble is at the front, not at the back.
