I don't know as though it is fair to say it takes several barrels of oil to make one barrel. There are issues in the sense that they use a fair amount of natural gas to heat the sand to get the oil out( steam is the issue I think so more likely heating the water to get the oil out of the sand). I think one of the bigger issues is the amount of water used and the amount of dirty water left behind. They need to find a better means of filtering and recycling the water to prevent polluting the area and to ensure they have sufficient water.
I think there has been talk of nuclear plants to provide the energy too. Energy used as well to move the slurry out of northern Canada into the USA to be refined - so who knows the true cost of all that? But, I guess hauling crude from other places in the world is not free either so always an issue. What I was getting at is there seems to be a net loss of oil there... I think most people are smart enough to realize that is a bad idea for making money. Now if it takes a barrel of oil to make 1.1 barrel from oil shale then there is still a net positive amount of oil. But 3 barrels of oil to get 1? That makes NO sense.
