Lemmie make sure I understand. I'd say, you connect one end of your test like 
to - at the battery. You then touch the other connector on your test like to 
the + lead at the radio and the battery lights up, thats normal and you'd 
expect that, I would too.

I'd also expect that if you touched the test like to the - lead off the radio 
as long as that lead is NOT connected to the car (ie its free floating, not 
grounded, not touched to battery -) your test light would light up.

Because doing so is just essentially wiring your test light in series with the 
radio.

This is a direct comparision - with a test light - clamp the wire to the neg 
of the battery - then tougch the probe to the + the light lights.  Then 
touch the probe to the neg - no light.
