I imagine they were tracking your Rhino as you suppose, but even if the voice is scrambled, couldn't they triangulate you?
Maybe they just wanted to see who was in the area - which is probably why they didn't make physical contact - when they saw you were just "hikers". Were you near any military facilities? In Southern AZ there are many electronic sensors along the border. We've seen helicopters come straight out to our location from Tucson, look around right where we were and then head straight back to Tucson. We didn't have any modern vehicles, GPS or cell phones, so we assumed we triggered something. The sensors were for intercepting both drug and human traffickers. Whenever they spotted us and realized that we're deer hunters, they would ignore us and leave. Today they probably have live video and sound. There was always a lot of drug activity in the spot we used to hunt. We've since abandoned our 50-year family hunting spot because of the increasing confrontations with drug dealers. Also when we cut wood out near Sasabe, the A-10's would "strafe" our trucks. This was 20 - 30 years ago and we just took it as them practicing on our "tank" - we would always wave at them when they flew by us and enjoyed the activity and didn't feel threatened - this was during the cold war. Back then we sold fire wood to several A-10 pilots. Stay safe, Mark B. We all interpreted the encounter the same way. Dr. Bunch thought it was some jet jockey trying to show off but this doesn't answer the question to how he knew we were at that remote location in the first place. The pilot completely surprised us. He came around the mountain and we did not hear the jet until it was at our exact coordinates. It was impressive how close he came to us out of nowhere. The jet was so close that we observed the pilot turning his head to get a better look at us. He hit the afterburners, then flew straight up and was out of sight in few mere seconds. We did not observe any more activity after this. We had not seen a plane or another car all day and we were completely out of cell phone range. The only thing I can think of that betrayed our position was our FM communications on a Rhino with tagging. Too bad you can not buy FM communicators with encryption any more. If they didn't want you there, wouldn't they send a helicopter? Or why would they bother telling you that you are being tracked? Is there a chance (just a chance) you have misinterpreted this event? Hope you are well. Our group consisting of my wife, Zann von Hupe, Dr. Ted Bumch and myself were literately in the middle of nowhere here in Nevada on a mountain side and were buzzed by an F-18 jet. The pilot turned the jet sideways, matched our altitude and hit his afterburners just to let us know that he knew we were there. He flew so close to us that we could see his helmet and face-shield as he turned his head to get a better look at us. My question is; what device gave up our position? No, we were not doing anything wrong and Dr. bunch was extremely angry about being buzzed so close because it startled all us and we could have lost our footing on the steep slopes.
