October 17th, 2010 A 30-year-old mentally challenged man was arrested by the Bandra police for allegedly stabbing five pedestrians, two of whom he attacked on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Sheldon Pereira, a resident of the up market Chappel Road area of Bandra (West). However, the police made Pereira sit hand-cuffed to the window of the detection room as they apprehended that his presence in the lock-up could spell danger to other inmates. This is the second such incident in a month. Another mentally ill person from the Nehru Nagar area of Juhu was recently arrested for allegedly attempting to murder a relative of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. The police said that Pereira’s first victim was Sunderraj Velu, a resident of Dharavi, who had come to attend the Sunday mass at a nearby church. Witnesses told the police that Pereira attacked Velu’s back with a knife as he was emerging from the church’s gate. The victim raised a cry for help, despite bleeding profusely. The passers-by and other devotees from the church noticed Velu and rushed him to the Holy Family Hospital. The witnesses added that Pereira, who fled the spot immediately, assaulted his second target, identified as Bharat Jagtiani, a medical representative, about half a kilometre away. Though the police have records of assault on these two persons, locals from the area said that the accused had stabbed at least two other people from the same area earlier. Pereira was arrested after the police was duly informed. “After the medical test at JJ hospital, he has been sent to Thane mental hospital for treatment,” added Gawande.
