Urban police launch a drive to transform mentally challenged persons
A helping hand: Supt of Police, Guntur Urban, Ake Ravikrishna interacting with
a mentally challenged person

GUNTUR : Abandoned by their near ones, deserted by their families and object
of scorn and abuse. It is a tough world to live for the mentally challenged.
They are often found on the roads in a bad shape and derided by people.
But they can look forward to some good times in future in Guntur, thanks to a
novel initiative by the Guntur Urban Police to provide a new lease of life.
Superintendent of Police, Guntur Urban, Ake Ravikrishna, who has given a new
meaning to social policing by launching several initiatives aimed at mitigating
the plight of Hizras, child labourers and women, has initiated this move.
‘Operation Mentally Challenged’ is the name given to the novel programme.
Six persons, who have been identified at Mangalagiri, Pattabhipuram and Lalapet
police stations, were sent to the Institute of Mental Health at Erragadda in
Hyderabad and after their treatment, they would be reunited with their
families.
“We want to give a new lease of life to the mentally challenged and try to
transform them. The Guntur Urban Police will identify more persons in a special
drive,’’ Mr. Ravikrishna told reporters at his camp office where a bus carrying
the six persons started for Hyderabad.
In his earlier initiative, the SP visited the homes of members of transgender
community here and assured them of support to build homes and getting Voter ID
cards. The Venkateswara Swamy Devastanam committee has come forward to build
houses for Hizras. Mr. Ravikrishna has also taken up the cause of Yanadi
community.
