8-Jul-2013MADURAI: Sivaganga town police arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly murdering an eight-year-old mentally-challenged girl, whose body was found in a bag under a wash basin, inside a cemented wall on Saturday morning. The accused, Amalraj, was arrested on Sunday at a relative's house in Madurai. Police said that Amalraj, son of Chinnappan was a native of Pandukudi near Thiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district. Police investigation revealed that the murder of the victim, Akshaya was not a planned one. Amalraj, who confessed to the murder during police investigation, said, that Akshaya had been using an empty land near his house for defecation. Although he had warned her several times that defecating in front of his house was causing embarrassment to him and reiterated her to stop it, the girl persisted. Amalraj also told police that he saw Akshaya defecating in the same place despite the warnings. Irked by the act, he threw a stone to drive her away from the place. But, the stone fell right on her head causing her to faint immediately. The incident took place at around 5pm. He took her inside the house and tried to help her regain consciousness. When Akshaya's mother started searching for her daughter around his house after she failed to return home, a panicked Amalraj hid the girl inside a television cupboard and locked it. When he opened the cupboard after 30 minutes, he realised that the girl was already dead. Then he tied her hands and legs using a steel rope and dumped into the space below his kitchen hand wash after packing her in a bag, police said. The fear of being caught by the police drove Amalraj to a relative's house in Madurai. A special team, which arrived in Madurai arrested him, police added. K Stalin, deputy superintendent of police, Sivaganga town said, "Amalraj has confessed to his crime and furt her investigations are on. Although autopsy reports are ready we will have to wait for a week's time for scientific reports from the lab to know the exact cause of death," he said.
