Getting connected over ethernet is easy: just hook up a second NIC and run
dhcpcd against the new network device (you can probably do this from your
desktop network configuration program).

I'm not familiar with doing this over USB, one discussion I found from
google suggests running wvdial against the USB device, effectively starting
a PPP connection against it.  From there I would expect it to be all
automated by pppd.  From what little searching I have done, there doesn't
seem to be a lot of information available on using a cable modem over USB.
