Have you considered going network attached? Maybe with a raid array for redundancy. That would be my suggestion, you loose some of the portability though.
I love the netgear readynas products, and own one of the new pro's and older nv+'s and they have been great. I have also used the buffalo tech stuff but they don't support the sizes I needed to get to so I had to upgrade. Therefore: I have a buffalo tech terastation pro 1tb and 2tb that I am looking to unload because I have upgraded. Each with spare drives. If your interested contact me off list.
