I too am interested in getting an external HDD.

At this time the OP, Adam, has selected an external HDD, so for his
purposes this thread is closed. I'd like to use this thread to raise a
question I have about this topic.

I'd like to construct a homebuilt external HDD. I've been looking for an
external enclosure *with fan* (preferably 80 mm). There aren't many
models available (with fan). Some of the available models get bad
customer reviews on Newegg. So far, I've only found one promising
candidate, a Rosewill with 80 mm fan. It is available only from Newegg.
It costs $50, occasionally on sale for $40. It appears to have been
discontinued. The Antec MX-1 was recently on sale at Fry's for $20
+shipping. Customers complained about the power connector. Can anyone
recommend an external enclosure with fan?

Adam writes that he will be using his external HDD in continuous
service. I've read in online forums that external HDD's in fanless
enclosures rapidly heat up. This sometimes destroys the drive. Adam: you
might want to keep an eye on the HDD temperature. (With eSATA interface,
you can use SMART. With USB interface, you have to rely on touch.)

Mike Kershaw recommends avoiding Maxtor drives. According to a forum on
the web site slickdeals.net, since Maxtor has been acquired by Seagate,
Maxtor drives are now rebadged Seagates, so they should have high
quality.
