I don't have much input on the syncing options but I would definitely
reenforce Ed's recommendation to use something encrypted such as SSH, SFTP,
or FTPS.
Even if you don't care about other people being able to see your bookmarks,
FTP sends everything in the clear, including your username and password.
 While this doesn't necessarily give somebody free reign on your server, it
does open a big hole for somebody to start picking at the security of your
server.
If you do end up using FTP make sure that you do everything you possibly can
to lock it down and have the FTP login credentials only work for FTP.
