I also like using 'nano' at the command prompt, which also comes with 
pluggable ANSI code highlighting like vi has.  [Which code highlighting 
sections are available is configurable.  On Debian-based distributions see 
/etc/nanorc]  For a GUI code highlighter I typically also use Kate.
