I had Lubuntu LXDE in a celeron M processor with a memory stick the same size or smaller and it ran like the wind. It is possible that add ons might also slow Firefox down considerably, expecially ones that open with Firefox and immediately do something like ForecastFox. Lubuntu has Chromium as the default browser because they perceived of it as faster than Firefox.
The add-ons I suggested improve the performance and memory consumption of Firefox but it's true that some add-ons can slow down firefox. I have seen Chromium render sites a little faster then firefox but I have seen chromium and chrome consume a lot more memory then firefox. Using Firefox for its lower memory consumption and seeing some javascript heavy sites render on the screen slighly slower is not a bad trade off.
