I recently spent many weeks frustratingly fighting Ubuntu on various
different systems due to memory and cpu performance.

I started with 12.04 and then upgraded to 12.10 because 12.10 had some
items to address the specific performance issues I had. After upgrading, I
discovered that my AMD Radeon graphics card was not supported by either the
open source or closed source driver that 12.10 required - which caused yet
more performance issues.

In the end, I found out that the graphics driver requirements were due to
Ubuntu Unity. Unity uses a lot of cool nifty features which simply don't
on older cards.

At which point I started looking at alternative desktop managers, but they
all had various integration issues or were no longer supported so various
additional applications would fail because they expected a more up to date
windows manager. Until I discovered MATE. MATE is part of Linux Mint and
is based on the old Ubuntu Gnome desktop Installing MATE on Ubuntu
halfway solved my problem - but I was still in requirements hell with
various apps. Going back to scratch, I downloaded and installed Linux Mint
MATE edition - so that all my default package repositories would 'just
work' - and it was GREAT.

I eventually decided to give the Cinammon edition of Linux Mint a try.
Cinammon is Mint's next generation equivalent of Unity - so I expected it
to have the same problems. Ironically, it's been working fine so I now
have enough eye candy to make me happy and better performance.

I highly recommend Linux Mint - preferably installing both MATE and
Cinnamon so you can swap between them. The latest Linux Mint is based on
Ubuntu 12.04.
