tune to reduce overall memory use, but if anyone has

Switching to Unity 2D might help because it's much lighter then
compiz. You could also try a lighter window manager or other
lighter desktop environment.

One more tip for Firefox is to use unloadtab which unloads inactive tabs
from memory https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/unloadtab/ .
I don't know how stable it is but It has been working well so far.
