Do you have multiple desktops installed? If you log out and then log in for another desktop, does the problem surface there? The default setting for Linux is to use the last desktop that you logged out on. See if using another desktop solves the problem.

This is really weird. I just tried to shoot a video of this action - and it worked perfectly for three tries while I had the camera running.

You can smell it coming, can't you?

I turned the camera off, and if "failed" again.

It's the opposite of camera shy.
