Yeah freeBSD seems to be one of those love or hate distros for folks.  To
be honest though, I really don't do anything that requires me to look at
the underlying OS except purging squid files or looking at some logs.
There is a custom CLI for pfsense which is useful if you are setting up
lots of firewalls or maybe rules that are more clicks than their text
counterpart but I really only need the admin webpage for single setups.  As
a warning, this may be a web quirk, but I have run into scenarios along
with some friends were options get set and don't seem to work until a
reboot.  This has been really rare, like once or twice, and only in big
config changes, so if you think it should work but it doesn't seem to try a
restart before second guessing your settings or before stuffing the
keyboard down the cd-rom bay :-P  Once it is setup though I have never had
to restart any of my boxes.
