I would try LRP's stuff, but since I have a 10 Mbps line here at work,
I'm not very much inclined to set up a router at home, where I only have
a modem dialup. Also, the ancient box in question is loud. OTOH, I
wonder if I could disable the fan in the PSU and end up with something
creative...

A Compaq by any chance? :) Haven't seen too many LS-120s. I could have
bought an Imperial buttload of them at an auction for FIM 200 (EUR ~35,
USD ~32) a piece once, but 1) I was looking for a monitor then (and got
one; FIM 1000 for a brand new 15" Trinitron tube) and 2), due to 1) I
didn't have the money.

That's odd. When I installed Linux on what is now my game box it had no
problems, and the distribution was an ancient Debian 1.3. MSI-5169 mobo
and a Fujitsu UDMA hard drive. No DMA, but it worked. (For the record:
my "toy box" with 20.5 GB WD drives can read 19.9 MB/s using DMA/33. Or
so hdparm tells me.)
