AFAIK, Holger made sure that it works for several people, working

Yes, that is basically correct. I can't think of anything else that
you should consider.

I'm currently using an ADSL connection and am getting that much
bandwidth (and often even more) with my Ariadne II set in half duplex
mode.

I can confirm that I have seen others on this list who have working
ADSL with PPPoE connections via T-DSL/Deutsche Telekom. Holger
covered the directions in several text files that are (IIRC) included
in the MiamiDx distribution archive.
