Network card speeds are in "bits" per second. Your transfer speeds are
most probably being reported in "bytes" per second. There's an 8 to 1
difference in the number of bits, which is near enough to 10 to 1, for you
to observe that sort of performance (expecting 10 Mb/s and seeing 1 Mb/s).

That's not too surprising. But then, if you tart up the Linux GUI (you
can put MUI to shame), it'll drag the speed down quite a lot.
