You never know with the phone company. It could be on their end and they're just not
telling you. While Qwest DSL here in seattle is fairly reliable (partially because
I'm using a different ISP, I already give them enough money every month) the people I
know who use Verizon and others seem to have more problems. And despite the cable
industry's propaganda otherwise, I see a lot of people switching from cable modems to
DSL assuming the phone company's switch allows it or is close enough.
Are you using Deutsche Telekom for your ISP too, or can you pick another local ISP? I
have found that having the local ISP 'between' you and the phone company can help a
LOT. Because it's in their interests to keep you happy, as opposed to the phone
company (which is a monopoly and thus doesn't have to care, you still have to pay them
anyway, for now). Thus the local ISP has been on the phone with me as we *both*
yammer at the phone company, and that seems to do a lot more good than just me doing
it. I don't know whether the government in Germany has forced the phone companies
(assuming Telekom isn't the only one, but it may be) to open their networks up to
local ISPs or not but if so, get a local ISP, you'll be happier. While the government
here has only been partially successful in doing this (of course, phone companies have
tons of money and can thus buy many, many politicians in the name of 'competition' to
vote otherwise) but at least it's a start.
It sounds like you have some greedy 'friends' on the other side when on Napster, that
is, they are getting a lot more files (thus downloading them from you) than you seem
to be getting from them - does the Amiga have a Gnutella client or similar that might
provide a more balanced approach?
