fwiw my dad's '91 V-6 S10 pickup farts out a massive cloud of soot on cold 
startup and smokes a bit until warm. I borrow it a lot so I have been doing 
some maintenance on it and it just passed CA smog with flying colors :-) 

It is likely the rings, but I haven't looked into it since it passed smog and 
doesn't seem to be burning much oil.
