Or-if it idles, compression is not bad enough to keep you from holding
the valves closed with the air.

IMO the simplest thing to start with is a compression check. Those
numbers will let you know how to proceed. You could then check a low
number with some oil through the plug hole. If it comes up with the oil,
then odds are it's rings.
