Having been the victim of a house fire and having a
volunteer FD respond to the call, I'll tell you this
- I wish I had had a paid for FD, they may actually
have been able to save the place. Please don't
lambast your uniformed services, you have no idea the
services that they do provide and be glad you don't
(or haven't) needed those services.

Do you own a home? Do you pay homeowners insurance on
it? Have you asked your insurance company what your
coverage would cost if there was not a paid for FD as
compared to a VFD? I'm pretty sure that paying that
FD tax is saving you LOTS more on your insurance
premiums.

As a different aside - something like 22% of all
Federal tax revenue goes into the DoD. What's your
ROI on that one?

There are plenty of things that the government spends our money on that we get little to no return on at an individual level (like, for instance, my house has never burnt down, so why should I pay for the fire department?), but it's been deemed useful at a societal level.
